Review: "Closer" - Hunter

Sugarland crossed with breezy pop sums up Hunter’s latest single. With the intention of capturing a relaxing, summer afternoon vibe, “Closer” captivates audiences and overwhelms them with joy. She explores the exciting rush one feels when experiencing a new relationship. With catchy lyrics, and a hook that sticks, this track is destined to be on everyone’s budding romance playlists. Leading up to the chorus, Hunter works up the courage to ask if the person she likes will “give it a shot.” Then the chorus hits, and the song bursts to life. She tells this potential lover to move “Closer// Move on over till you can’t get closer to me.” She wants to fill the emotional and physical gap between them, and be together at last. Coincidentally, this song has a double meaning for Hunter and her co-writers. The song has evolved into a metaphor for the aftermath of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Now that the world is slowly transitioning back to normal, we can now “get closer to our loved ones.” This makes the happy, upbeat vibe of the song stand out even more after the past few years of isolation and heartache. Hunter’s intention was to bring joy to listeners which she implements flawlessly with “Closer”.

Hunter wrote “Closer” with Grammy nominated producer and mixer, John Alagia, and prolific songwriter, David Ryan Harris. Their collective talent effortlessly blends together to create an outstanding track. The song has an upbeat melody that resembles what could be heard during a romance movie’s honeymoon phase montage. The musical foundation is in the muted acoustic guitar that is complimented by the electric guitar that comes in later. The drums provide for a nice, steady beat that strengthens the cheerful ambiance. A keyboard can be heard in the background giving the song character that it would be lacking without it. The song would not be complete without Hunter’s unique vocals that show off her incredible range. She pairs the song with a fun, lighthearted music video featuring her adorable dog and colorful aesthetics. The peppy, joyful mood is perfectly captured in this video, further spreading the happiness. “Closer” is another remarkable single that makes fans anticipate her upcoming EP.

Hunter is a singer-songwriter, actress, and model from a small town in Montana. When she was only ten-years-old, she was performing at local shows. In her adolescence, she traveled across the country to attend different vocal trainings. She also starred in many high school and community theater musicals, sang in multiple choirs, and led her own band. At age 18, she moved to Los Angeles to attend Musician’s Institute, where she graduated with a double major in Vocal Performance and Music Production. “Closer is the latest single off of her debut EP, Hello: My Name Is HUNTER, set to be released on September 30th. After years of hard work, she is ready for her music career to soar into new heights.
