Review: "Common Sense" - Sophia Gripari

“Common Sense” is an introspective pop single that explores the complicated emotions behind knowing that despite how toxic a past relationship was, you can be at risk of running back to them. At the start, two years have passed since this unhealthy relationship ended. Months of progress and distance seem pointless as two simple texts from the other person lead to the rekindling of this pile of ashes. Despite considerable distance through time and measure, a small bit of contact is enough to be pulled back in. After all, despite being apart for years, they were still one of your favorite contacts. You know just how intoxicating they are and what a minute amount of interaction will do to you. But you also understand that you will almost always give them the benefit of the doubt. They dragged you into their depths before, so why not again?

“Common Sense” is a synth-based pop anthem which offers a stunning juxtaposition between the upbeat synth instrumentation and the emotional lyricism. Every line brings a nice shimmeringly sweet vocal accompanied by an upbeat tempo that serves as a delightful experience. Those lines, however, describe the constant rationalization of the narrator’s actions that they eventually succumb to. There is a childlike naivety to the lyrics that offer an engaging difference to the synth beats and sweet melody. Another standout aspect of this song is the calming vocals. Sophia Gripari stays in a particular volume throughout most of the single, showing off her vocal prowess during the chorus. But it remains in a particular register, calm and collected, as another juxtaposition to the emotional lyricism.
