Review: "Crying In My Boots" - EMMY

EMMY has officially released her third single “Crying In My Boots,” a soft and forlorn song dedicated to a very specific type of loneliness that everyone’s experienced at some point or another. It’s an all-encompassing sadness that you keep trying to run from, but no matter how far you remove yourself from its roots, it’ll always follow you like a ghost. You’ll somehow end up drunk and wandering the streets, crying on your own. EMMY’s buttery vocals coupled with such evocative lyrics render “Crying In My Boots” a tune that rings true for all those that are currently in that strange, liminal, lonely space.
“Crying In My Boots” is silky yet sad; every time the chorus swings back around, “I’m on the run, run, run from everyone,” you can imagine exactly what EMMY wanted to illustrate: fleeing, in spite of not knowing exactly what you’re running from. There’s an underlying youthful uncertainty that floats around in the songwriting; I love how it manages to pinpoint such a particular variety of isolation while still maintaining its personal nature. The instrumentals certainly help in keeping the song’s tone. “Crying In My Boots” is more subdued than a regular pop song; the synth, strings, percussion– everything– retains a mellowness that allows for the song’s lyrics to shine through, supported by instrumentals that exist to build upon its message. It's chill, moody, and perfect for a rainy night spent inside; "Crying In My Boots" is the kind of song that just keeps getting better as the track wears on. By the end, you'll want to put it on repeat and drown in its beautiful soundscape.
EMMY, AKA Emmy Hartman, is a 23-year-old artist based in Cleveland, Ohio. After gaining over 3 million followers on TikTok through posting acapella covers of both Lorde and Billie Eilish, EMMY released her debut single in 2021, entitled “STUPID BIG TEETH.” The song gained massive success, having over 11 million plays on Spotify to date; in 2023, she dropped her second single “COOL GIRL” to much success as well. EMMY’s style of pop is truly one-of-a-kind, a singular kind of sound that can only be called “EMMY.” “Crying In My Boots” is her most recent release and is part of her upcoming debut EP to be released in November. “Crying In My Boots” is definitely a worthwhile addition to any playlist looking for a good, personal, and heartfelt song.
