Review: "Felicity" - mairzë

The first released single from Mairzë, "Felicity," plunges into the depth of feeling burnt out, lost, and doomed. In their pop-rock ballad, Mairzë pleads with the feeling of felicity assigning it a human-like role as the song's audience, asking her shot at happiness, "I wonder if you’d want me," considerinh if she even deserves happiness. The singer expresses nostalgia for someone else being in charge of her life such as being a kid: "Tell me what to do today/Show me how to feel/Teach me how to talk." She unravels honestly confessing to listeners how their fears burden her. The fear of never truly belonging anywhere, the fear of taking a break because she'll never return, the fear that she hasn't worked hard enough to deserve happiness, are plaguing this narrator.
Blending key characteristics across pop, indie rock, and alt-pop genres, "Felicity," is Mairzë, but not MC Hentz's, first single. Compounded elements of heavy percussion, electric strings, and ambient production effects work together to create a unique soundscape expressing the sense of restlessness that the song is about. The single leans into a sonic rock texture maintaining a bass-heaviness that portrays its intense mood. While the thematics and overall instrumentation of the song are heavy, there's plentiful breaks in the song that focus on airy vocalization and acoustic strings that come through like patches of hope. Mairzë's voice cultivates an apprehensive tone that matches the yearning lyrics while still delivering a vibrant quality.
Mairzë is the newest project from musician MC Hentz who has previously released music under the name Dalloway, a nod to the musician's favorite novel, Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway. Dalloway put out their first single in 2022 with an EP at the end of the year which marked an important step of the official debut of her music. "Felicity," marks the first single MC has put out in 2026 introducing her new project. From outside of Boston, growing up in Dover, Massachusetts, MC moved to Los Angeles after attending Middlebury College in Vermont. The artist works across both coasts after residing in LA for over a decade. Inspired by deep nostalgia in her sound and lyrics, Mairzë is pivoting to explore a new side of their art.
