The so-called “honeymoon phase” is an exciting time in a new relationship. The two parties are on Cloud 9 and want to give all their love to one another. All relationships would be easy if we could stay here forever. Unfortunately, we can’t, for the rose-colored glasses will soon come off. When this happens, the relationship is put to the test. Will all that love remain when the exciting feeling of new love fades? It is great when the answer is, “yes.” This is not always the case though. Dee Holt sings about the other outcome of this situation. Her song, “fell in love” is a pop ballad that reflects back on a relationship that didn’t make it past those blissful first moments.

One thing that stood out to me about “fell in love” was the intro. The lyrics are repeated in the chorus. At the beginning, they are sung a-cappella and have an echo. I interpreted this as being the beginning of a flashback. As for the song overall, The instrumentation is sad which perfectly goes along with the lyrics. There is a steady beat during the verses that reminds me of rain. It keeps repeating as Holt sings lines such as “all that made me love you more has disappeared along with you it feels so wrong.” The music becomes more intense on the chorus. It is a harsh flashback to reality as she sings words from the intro. The heavy feeling of heartbreak is very relatable, and Holt is showing her listeners that they are not alone in their sadness.

Dee Holt is an alt-pop artist from Montreal, Canada. “Fell in Love” is just one of the songs on her 2023 EP, I'll be there.” It is a collection of breakup anthems and you’ll be able to find one to suit whatever stage of heartbreak you’re in. For instance, the EP’s title track is similar to “fell in love,” as it is mourning the end of the relationship. On the other hand, “sober” is about the freedom of having a toxic person out of your life. Holt has done some great work with this group of songs, and I can’t wait to see what else she has in store.
