Review: "I Sent My Therapist To Therapy" - Alec Benjamin

Alec Benjamin’s latest song, “I Sent My Therapist To Therapy”, is a dark comedy in which therapist after therapist seek their own help after simply hearing what he’s been through.  The irony of the piece allows for a certain humor and word play but the underlying truth behind it is depressing at the very least.  A direct interpretation of the song allows the listener to relate to problems within getting professional mental help, feeling they are beyond it and even more so that the therapist is unequipped to deal with such extensive issues.  The piece addresses using therapy as a cure all when, in reality, therapists are just people and some things are beyond treatment.  A broader take on “I Sent My Therapist To Therapy” extends to all who one may go to seeking help, feeling the burden of their own problems on others.  Either way there’s an obvious theme of being shut out and feeling alone in these issues, but in playing the song itself there is a sense of laughable relatability and community.

The piece begins by setting the scene, telling the story like a repetitive anecdote in each new therapist's office.  The pacing is extremely quick, with Alec rattling through lines, almost mocking how he knows them so well due to how much he’s done this- slowing down only when he says “I’ve heard it all before”.  The instrumentals match that storytelling theme set at the start of the song, being minimally used to keep the pace with quick, electric beats but not much beyond this.  Alec Benjamin uses his voice as an instrument in this case, playing the therapist, himself, and a narrator, and adjusting his tone accordingly.  It’s not until the first chorus that a real change in the music itself can be heard and it's an impactful one because of it, cementing that clever line “I sent my therapist to therapy” in the listener’s mind.

Alec Benjamin got his start like any other artist, in promoting his music however he could, parking lots of concerts, social media, etc.  But unlike these other artists, he succeeded on a global scale.  He’s got an incredibly impressive record, having over eight billion global streams, millions of followers on every platform- his most successful being Youtube with 5.2 million to date.  He holds over a billion views on the channel where he mostly posts his songs and their subsequent music videos.  He’s appeared on The Tonight Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Late Late Show, and others.  He’s been recognized by Time magazine and other influential media outlets, and all of these eyes on him across platforms report back the same thing- Alec Benjamin is worth watching.  So keep a look out for any news or releases below on his socials and stream “I Sent My Therapist To Therapy” below.
