Review: "Someone You Once Had" - ROSIE

We can all admit that at some point in our lives, we've taken the good things we have for granted. Sometimes that good thing is a person. We become so used to having them around, and we fail to give these valuable people the appreciation they deserve. But when they decide not to be in our lives anymore, we mourn their loss deeply. Now put yourself in the shoes of being the one that was taken for granted. ROSIE reflects on this situation in her breakup anthem, “Someone You Once Had.” She tells listeners about an ex that didn't show her the appreciation she deserved and how she realized her worth. She uses every aspect of the song to demonstrate a newfound power. Overall, I think it conveys a good message and will be very inspiring to listeners.

The first aspect of the song that stood out to me was the progression of the instrumentation and the lyrics. The first verse starts out with a slow piano melody as ROSIE asks questions such as “were you always so good at pushing people away? ”You can hear the music build as it gets to the chorus and ROSIE is realizing her worth. The chorus then ends with her parting words, “I’ll just be someone you once had.” The second verse is also a reflection on her relationship as she sings, “Thought there wasn’t a thing that could tear us apart.” On the second chorus, ROSIE gains even more power, as the music speeds up. The instrumentation changes to include piano, guitar, and drums. ROSIE uses her gift of music to teach listeners a valuable lesson. We must be thankful for all the good things we have everyday.

ROSIE is a singer/songwriter from New York. She was raised in a music family and began writing songs at a young age. She is a firm believer in being 100% authentic and lives this out in both her personality and her music. Another one of ROSIE’s relatable songs is “Something I Hate.” It is a soft guitar ballad about learning to love yourself. You can listen to even more of her hard work on her 2021 debut album, 20 mg of Happiness. “Someone I Once Had” is ROSIE’s first release of 2023. She hit the ground running with this one and I can’t wait to see what else she has in store! Follow all of ROSIE's socials below to be the first to hear of new releases and upcoming tour dates!
