Review: “Trust Issues” - Emei
Inspired by a dream where Emei shaved her head, signifying a desire to let go of the Chinese American singer and songwriters newest song “Trust Issues” was born. As she grew up with immigrant parents, there was an overly emphasized need to be independent and self-sufficient, as an unseen side effect Emei has always had trouble dealing out trust to others. As an adult now the reality is that she must now face the issues that this over emphasized self reliability has caused. Her newest single embodies the realization that as you grow up, there is truly no way to rely on only yourself.
Beginning with a similar chord progression as her other hit song “Late to the Party” Emei’s new single quickly jumps into a catchy beat to carry the song along. With a combination of witty lyrics as well as lingering melodies her song creates a smooth flow into the various elements of the song. While the beginning of the song starts at a slower pace, the beat quickly picks up with the first chorus and continues in a similar rhythm through the continuing song. While the song progresses she repeatedly changes the lyrical patterns, creating contrasting sounds within the song. She also utilizes strong guitar elements through more impactful parts of the song furthering melodical contrast within the song.
With over 3.5 hundred monthly listeners, Emei has quickly risen up within the music industry since her single “Late to the Party” gained 9.5 million views on Tik Tok and instagram. Starting her career at 15 when she emerged on Chinese Idol, her stage presence developed immensely. After placing third on the show, she continued on releasing music on Chinese platforms, and eventually performing on Dancing With the Stars China. After covid hit, Emei started to release music on American platforms such as Earmilk, Ones to Watch, Early Rising, and Lyrical Lemonade. With her newfound social media presence, her latest singles are quickly gaining popularity within the media, ensuring that her new music will gain popularity quickly.
