- Review: "Final Girl" - Eva Rose
Eva Rose latest release is a grunge-style, horror themed track released right in time for Halloween. “Final Girl” takes the story of a previous relationship and twists it into the dark, horror movie trope of the same name. Being a final girl in a horror movie means the character is the only one that survived the killer’s terror and lived to tell the story. Rose comparing this trope to a former partner reveals the relationship as the nightmare it truly was, and the dark place she was in while with them. The second verse contains a string of lyrics that paints the toxic relationship in a very morbid, yet clear image. Rose sings, “And I swore I would mean more than the trophies you hide in your floorboard// I always believed I would make it to the summer// I guess there’s a reason the rest of them were runners.” She references the previous girls that her former partner used and disposed of, like a serial killer in a slasher film. When Rose got into this relationship, she was unaware of these “trophies” from past relationships, but now that she knows their true character, she understands why all the other girls ran. “Final Girl” instantaneously catches the attention of listeners and leaves them astonished by the absolute masterpiece Rose created. “Final Girl” mixes alternative-rock and ethereal-pop sounds to create an infectious track. Filled with dark and mysterious imagery, the song is expected to have a grunge atmosphere to it. The track begins with a single electric guitar that is soon paired with the smooth drums. As the chorus begins, Rose adds a distorted electric guitar, creating the unique multi-layered guitar effect. Rose’s heavenly vocals guide the listener through the story of a twisted romance. The end of the chorus is topped off with the soothing bass guitar that compliments the grunge style. Consisting of an upbeat melody, the production remains steady throughout the majority of the song. Then at the bridge, the song explodes with a vocal effect that highlights the climax. The entire track is full of life and imagery that fans cannot help but to fall in love with Rose all over again. Eva Rose is an independent singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, now based in New York City. As an Alt-Pop artist, her music is a blend of whimsical indie pop and melancholy lyrics. Rose made her debut in 2021 with the lead single from her EP of the same name, “Out of Lives”. “Final Girl” is the third release of 2022, marking a new era of music for her. With her immense talent, Rose not only writes for herself, but has lent her songwriting skills to other artists in both Los Angeles and New York. - Review: "From A Distance" - Tilsen
Tilsen’s latest single is a whimsical track full of uplifting optimism and wholesome sweetness. “From A Distance” was created from the heartbreaking moment that Tilsen realized that she had met the right person, but at the wrong time. She loved this person wholeheartedly, but they did not reciprocate those feelings. Rather than dwelling in the sadness, Tilsen flipped the script on the regular approach to this unrequited love by looking forward to a future where they will one day be ready for her love. In the chorus, she sings, “Tell me when you’re ready// Darling I’ll be waiting// This is something you must do on your own.” Tilsen is willing to wait for this person to figure out that their heart truly desires her, so for now she is going to love them “from a distance.” When listening to this song, the audience cannot help but feel overjoyed by the positive energy that Tilsen put into the song. Tilsen’s ambition for “From A Distance” was to put a smile on the listener’s face and make them hopeful for the future. Naturally, that means the song needs to be filled with upbeat melodies and catchy lyrics. The light and breezy guitar at the beginning sets up the gleeful tone of the track. As the song goes on, the pre-chorus adds the light-handed drums that continue with this atmosphere. By the chorus, the listener finds them swaying along to the rhythm with a smile on their face. Tilsen’s elated energy shines through in her gorgeous vocals throughout the track, and takes the listener by surprise when she starts humming along to the melody at the end of the chorus. This compliments the breezy, happy energy of the song and makes the listener feel these emotions along with Tilsen. “From A Distance” is a joyful track that is a surefire way to lift the spirits of listeners. - Review: "Liar Liar" - Ceara Cavalieri
Ceara Cavalieri is coming for blood in her latest pop-punk single, “Liar Liar”. The song is her fiery response to discovering that her boyfriend was cheating on her. Cavalieri’s subconscious tried to warn her when she had a dream that he was cheating with a good friend of hers. She received confirmation when a friend of his showed her screenshots to prove it. After uncovering his infidelity, the rightfully angry singer turned to songwriting as a cathartic release for her emotions. The song is not only meant to be a release for Cavalieri, but for anyone who is experiencing these same feelings. Consisting of angsty lyrics such as, “Guess I should’ve known the person you were// A sorry excuse for a narcissist” and feisty lyrics like, “Liar liar, big fat liar// God you’re such an ugly crier,” Cavalieri efficiently takes her heartache and fashions it into an infectious rock anthem. “Liar Liar” is a flawless addition to not only Cavalieri’s discography, but the pop-punk genre as a whole. The song begins with an intense guitar that is reminiscent of early 2000’s pop-punk. In the background, the bass effortlessly complements the guitar, tying in the pop sounds. Within the second half of the verses, Cavalieri brings in a second guitar to harmonize with the first one. Throughout the track, the intense drums lead the song, compelling the listener to hand bang along to the beat. In the pre-chorus, the production is muted. This adds to the intensity of each chorus, including the final chorus when Cavalieri is ready to drive the song home. - Review: "Message to the old me" - ISA
ISA is speaking to her younger self in her latest single, “Message to the old me”. The track is about what she would say to her past self if she could turn back time. She wants to tell this version of herself that she does not need to feel pressured to be perfect and that making mistakes is normal. ISA wishes that when she was fifteen-years-old, she knew not to take life “so seriously” and to enjoy the time she has. In the chorus, ISA lists off the multiple things she wishes she had done, and wraps it up by singing, “I wish there was a way to put it down in words// Everything I learned// And send it as a message to the old me.” Everyone has something they wish they could tell their former self, now that they have grown and learned what they know now. - Review: "Gatsby" - Gold Steps
Gold Steps latest EP, It Ain't It, includes the energetic focus single, "Gatsby". The song is an emotionally charged track filled with vulnerability, and references to the classic novel, The Great Gatsby. Lead singer, Liz Mauritz, wrote every song on the album, including “Gatsby”, with a specific person in mind. The lyrics in the song are more direct than the band's previous work, and she hopes it inspires listeners to be authentically themselves as well. The song is about a broken relationship and reminiscing on what could have been. Throughout the track, the lyrics reference the “green light” that Gatsby sees across the bay, signaling the hope he was holding out for his love, before the light went out forever. Gold Steps brilliantly take a classic piece of literature and twist it into a beautiful metaphor for love, longing, and loss. Frequently when The Great Gatsby is referenced in pop culture, it is in regards to the parties, the glamour, and the wealth. Deviating from this trend, the Gold Steps made their song about the true meaning of the novel: hopeless love and relentless longing. “Gatsby” is a phenomenal track that was brilliantly crafted making both pop punk fans and bookworms proud listeners of the band. Staying true to the pop punk genre, Gold Steps created a fiery track built off of raw emotion. The song takes off immediately with the steady drums. The listener is instantly intrigued by Mauritz’s unique voice as she leads them through the emotional rollercoaster. When the pre-chorus begins, lead guitarist, Zach Duarte, makes his entrance with the upbeat guitar. Simultaneously, Ryan Rivas, the bassist, joins in with the Duarte and effortlessly compliments the guitar. The song begins to pick up, and then bursts into an emotional explosion in the chorus. “Gatsby” is a brilliant nod to a classic novel with such rich imagery, that it is only natural that the song was released with a corresponding music video. With a music video filled with intense emotion and imagery, pinpointing the best part is difficult. However, what stands out the most is how the band uses a green stage light, incorporating the iconic The Great Gatsby reference in the video, as well. The entire video is a perfect representation of the song itself, and the meticulous details Gold Steps inserted in track. Gold Steps is a pop-punk band formed in 2016. The members consist of lead vocalist, Liz Mauritz, lead guitarist, Zach Duarte, and bassist, Ryan Rivas. In November 2016, they released their debut EP, Louder Than Words. Since then, Gold Steps released several singles and their full-length album, Incandescent. The band went on a quick hiatus and returned in 2021 with a new lineup. The song is an ode to her younger self, thinking back to the self-doubts and anxiety she felt in the past. Katherine Li recently dropped her six-track debut EP, Crush(ed). This project consists of songs about unrequited love and a different type of heartache. Li allowed her songs to express this alternate form of heartache by touching on relationships that never were, and the ones that were always one-sided until the bitter end. The final track of the EP, “Miss Me Too”, focuses on the latter.
