Founded in the jam band scene of Boone, NC in 2021 Jacoozy is a five-piece band that dares to showcase their skills through blending genres like jazz, funk and indie. Now based in Asheville, Jacoozy features guitarists Killian Wright and Will Fentress, drummer Pauly Scott, keyboardist Isaac McMcurry and bassist Ramon Garcia. Together, they are known for their gripping live performances, lush instrumentals and storytelling lyrics.
Their debut album, Still Afloat, was released on September 17, ushering Jacoozy into a new era as a band. While remaining true to their roots, it is sure to take them to new heights. The seven-track album captures the essence of their live performances, bringing their stage presence to listeners at home.
I am completely new to the world of jam music, but Jacoozy makes exploring the genre easy. The songs are moving and authentic, and whether you need to get up and groove or sit and reflect, there is something for everyone to relate to.

Don’t Leave Nothin’ Behind
“Don’t Leave Nothin’ Behind” invites listeners into the album with groovy guitars and an eclectic blending of sounds. All members of Jacoozy contribute vocals to their work, and this is a perfect example. While their harmonies are well-polished and central to the song, they do not overshadow the nuances of their instrumental talents. Each member’s skills are well showcased, and listeners can easily pick them out individually while they come together to create an incredible opening number.
Spilling
Spilling” is another highlight of Jacoozy’s vocal talents, paired with soothing instrumentals that are easy to get lost in. McMurry’s keyboarding skills also have their time to shine throughout as they open the song and carry a significant part in the latter half. Additionally, Wright’s and Fentress’s guitar work closes out the song with a memorable impact.
My Old Friend
“My Old Friend” is a funky track held together with a tight arrangement that once again gives each member a chance to shine. The lyrics are catchy, and the arrangement has a free quality about it in the beginning before slowing slightly. The song picks up again with a gorgeous instrumental build, riding it out to the end.
Hurry
“Hurry” is one song I’m looking most forward to hearing live when I see Jacoozy for their Halloween show at the Bijou Theater in Knoxville, TN. This is a beautiful feat of lyrical storytelling, complemented by impressive guitar work. It’s simply fun, with an upbeat, danceable quality, making it 100% perfect for the stage.
Early
“Early” is my favorite from Still Afloat, simply because of its earworm lyrics that I’ve been loving since its release. Furthermore, I am always drawn to strong drumming, and Scott’s talents are paramount to this track’s groove. This is another song that truly showcases how Jacoozy's experience and approach to live music shine on this record.
Tired
“Tired” is another one of my favorites on Still Afloat. The lyrics are relatable and comforting, amplified by moody instrumentals. It is easy to hear the influence alternative music has had on Jacoozy in the opening guitars, while the rest of the song draws on the genre-blending they are known for. Having grown up in the emo and alternative scene myself, this drew me in right away. That being said, there is a sound to it that is uniquely Jacoozy.
Burn
“Burn” would fit perfectly in a coming-of-age film. It possesses a cinematic quality, with its reflective lyrics and soothing harmonies. As the song builds to a flourishing finish, listeners are swept up in the emotive qualities a strong arrangement can have. Leaving a lasting impression, this is the perfect bookend to the album.
The best part of this record is that there is something new to discover with each listen. No matter what track you put on, you will notice a new element that enhances the arrangements and/or lyrical narratives. Still Afloat marks a significant milestone in Jacoozy’s career, highlighting their musical chemistry and the passion they have for their work. This is just the beginning of what is sure to be a vibrant adventure for the band.
Still Afloat is streaming on all platforms, available now. Jacoozy will embark on their southeastern fall tour on October 2 with their first date in Atlanta, GA. Tickets can be purchased on their website, here.
