Your new single “All I Want” has such an incredible, catchy melody that will leave people wanting to hear more! Can you share the story behind this song?
Yulia: «All I Want» is a result of my obsession with dark pop and pop punk but I always try to forget about genre boundaries because I think it’s boring. When I got these instrumentals and heard how cool the structure is, my first thought was - that’s it.
Lyrically this song was inspired by my experience of struggling with depression and negative thoughts in general. Sometimes I just try to force myself to think positively, interesting but sometimes it helps and I think that I don’t need anything because I’m already happy and I have all I’ve ever wanted. You know when someone says «be grateful for everything you have, you’re healthy, your family and friends are alive and healthy too» and you’re agree, but at the same moment you’re too ambitious and you always want to be on top of a mountain so you’re not fully satisfied. «All I Want» is a song about trying to be happy with what you have even if you’re not.
Can you share a bit about what your songwriting process looks like?
Yulia: My songwriting process is always different. Sometimes I have melodies in my head and I always try to record it with my phone because I can forget it just in a couple minutes. Sometimes I write lyrics first but that’s more rare for me. I have a notebook and I write there when I’m inspired. But not always my melodies fit my lyrics. So sometimes I write melodies for lyrics I have, sometimes lyrics for melodies. Actually I think that the melody is the most important thing in music. A song can have excellent lyrics, high quality production and strong «right» vocals but I always skip even such songs if there is no cool melody.
This might be a tough one, but if you could switch bodies with any other artist in the world for a day, who would you choose?
Yulia: Oh! That’s really tough haha. Okay, let’s say Ryan Hennessy, the vocalist of Picture This band. His voice is something extremely beautiful and unreal. Also I would like to see all he has in his wardrobe.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not performing or making music?
Yulia: Usually I try to get somewhere nice and quiet, I don’t like noisy places and crowds. In such peaceful places I feel good and inspired. I also like to watch dumb tv shows and sleep.
What would you say is the best album of all time? An album you think is perfect front to back with no skips!
Yulia: My favourite album of all time is «ruiner» by nothing,nowhere. I still can’t find something more beautiful and talented. Highly recommend if you still haven’t heard it.
What can we expect from you for the rest of the year? I’m so excited to see what you release next!
Yulia: I have some singles I want to release till the end of this summer, also I’m currently working on some collaborations with cool artists. But the most important thing for me is that I finally understood what kind of music I want to make and you’ll find out about it soon because I can’t wait to share it with you!
