Q: I seriously can't get 'Roman Holiday' out of my head. Can you tell us how the song came to be?
Skylar: Aw thank you so much! 'Roman Holiday' was so fun to put out. The song is based off of one of my favorite all-time movies, Roman Holiday, starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. The premise of the film encompasses two people in Rome who fall in love at the right place but the wrong time. Even though it doesn't work out for them in the end, they still cherish the love that they had in that moment. I woke up with the idea for the song literally at 3am in the morning last summer, and knew I needed to bring the song to life! I ended up finishing it later that week, and I stepped back only to realize that I had something great in my hands!
Q: What would you say your favorite lyrics are from 'Roman Holiday'?
Skylar: I think my favorite lyrics are "An era that lasted one night." I love how it perfectly captures the life of Rome not only in the imagery, but also with its energy of a rushing love-affair.
Q: What is your songwriting process like?
Skylar: It's funny, because sometimes it's not always the same. In most cases, I'll get an idea of a melodic hook, or even a phrase to incorporate into a song. I'll then get my voice memo app out on my iPhone and try to hum into it (in these scenarios I might be in public at the grocery store or at an appointment, and I guarantee you that people look at me like I'm the craziest person on Earth which is hilarious). I'll then go back to my ideas and work from there. Sometimes I might get ideas from a line from a movie, or a book that I read. It really just depends! But the key is to always remain open to the ideas of the world around you - you never know what you might expect to find!
Q: If you could switch lives with any other artist for a day, who would you switch lives with?
Skylar: Oo that's a great question! I mean my go-to would have to be Taylor Swift...she's incredible, and I'd love to know what it's like in her day-to-day life.
Q: You've been a musician for a really long time. What first inspired you to become an artist?
Skylar: Well I would always be singing as a kid, really no matter what! In fact, I remember singing so much in school as a child, that some of the students would tell-on-me to the teacher because I'd sing too much! Although it wasn't until I was about 10 or so when one of my teachers told me that I had perfect pitch (in a nutshell it's when you can identify notes by hearing them - Charlie Puth talks about it all the time!) that I realized that music was something that I should really pursue.
Q: What is coming next in your musical journey?
Skylar: 2022 is gonna be super fun! I have more music coming on the way, so be sure to stay tuned, I'm super excited for you guys to listen!
