“American Girl Doll” is a chant-worthy, feminine anthem dedicated to self-advocacy that comments on autonomy through metaphorical protest. Moore introduces her comparison to an American Girl Doll singing, “fitting myself in your twist ties and boxes,” and “I got a human heart/ not made of cloth,” considering a controlling past relationship. This track establishes her autonomy against someone who wants to control her, and as an act of self-love and assurance. Moore asserts that she’s “not an American Girl Doll,” because she can’t stomach someone dictating her words, clothes, and level of trust. She boldly sings “get an American Girl Doll/ I’m not her," to close the cold conversation. An especially jarring verse, “I’m one of a kind/ my love is out of stock,” may be one of the most influential lyrics given the clash of playful and serious themes. In comparing herself to a doll and debunking that comparison, Moore communicates a clear message that no one can construe.
Moore’s new song is a moody assertion of self, accompanied by a slight acoustic twang and pop vocals. “American Girl Doll” has an intro that is reminiscent of a country pop melody until Moore graces the instrumentals with her full voice to change direction. The swiftness of the bridge intentionally prepares the listener for a comprehensive vocal belt that uniquely descends in tone, engaging a range of audiences. Moore layers vocals to emphasize her main points during the chorus that echo authority. Humming during the end of the song brings a childlike playfulness that's contrasted by the previous, strong vocals, detailing the seriousness of communicating self-worth and governance. The track comes full-circle with an ending similar to the intro, providing a perfect opportunity to click the “loop” button for a seamless repeat.
Offering personal lyrics, authentic storytelling, and divine vocals set over an enticing sound, Elli Moore is earning recognition. She is a Los Angeles pop artist, and has spent time as a songwriter/producer on the female team, LYRE, who has worked with artists in America and Asia. LYRE has 100+ million plays and has been involved in making songs featured on the Billboard top 10 and #1 on iTunes. Though recently releasing music, Moore is also currently cast as Barbies’ singing voice for songs in “Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures”. Her first single, “Gateway” was released in 2019, and her first album, “Confections” was released in 2020. She performs in mid-June with artist Emlyn at The Moroccan Lounge in LA. I’m excited to see what she does next!
