Review: "Angel On My Shoulder" - Katelyn Butcher

Katelyn Butcher’s latest single, “Angel On My Shoulder”, is an impressive addition to her discography. The song addresses the battle between the good and the bad in the world. She touches on her own internal struggle of wanting to find the good in all the bad, and avoiding the evil surrounding her. This is a subject that is difficult to discuss, yet is very relevant in the modern world. In today’s political, social, and economical landscape, it is hard not to be sucked up into the pessimistic ideologies that come with it. In the pre-chorus, Butcher sings “So why did I let them talk me into all these bad, bad things// I never gave in before, but now I swear I’m losing me… losing me”. She is aware that she is letting herself fall down the rabbit hole of bad decisions—something she has never done before. The angel on her shoulder is screaming and stressing, while the devil on the other one is whispering persuading messages in her ear. It is only a matter of time before she finds out which one will prevail.

The moment the song begins, the listener is immediately hooked. The smooth bass guitar sets up a moody, dark tone reminiscent of the 1950s folk rock genre. The production in the background makes for a creepy vibe that flows beautifully with Butcher’s soft vocals. The intensity increases when the electric guitar picks up and the synth beats escalate. The lyrics are vulnerable allowing the listener to feel every emotion. Butcher’s vocals are soft, yet intense. Her voice is made for this edgy, folk rock that is rare to find in the modern era. “Angel On My Shoulder” exceeds every expectation from listeners and is written flawlessly to fit the mood Butcher was wanting to express.

Katelyn Butcher is a singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles. In 2018, she released her first single “Darkness to Light”.
