Avoidant attachment's twists and turns hide under the guise of mellow synths and soft vocals in Katie Belle's latest single. "Avoidant Attachment" marks the conflicting interest between falling in love and protecting independence. She sings, "My feelings don't stick/ This ride makes me sick." Nothing ruins a growing relationship like that moment when the crush disappears and the ick settles in. Belle tears apart into the heartbreak with the line, "Going back and forth always overthink/ And I'm hard to love, I don't disagree." Pushing her partner away seems safe, but it only unleashes more chaos.
The airy instrumentals and the hushed vocals match the illusion that avoidant attachment presents to people. Underneath, with the strummed guitar, feelings echo and spill out. It's the sound of the perfect plan. The soft nu-disco elements invite listeners to spin and get lost in the mess of this relationship. Maybe the calm and the chaos can coexist. And maybe this is the song to encourage that deep breath before deciding whether or not to walk away.
Katie Belle is an indie-pop singer-songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia. She sings with a quiet voice and bold feelings. Belle began writing music at age 11.
