Review: "Baseball Bat" - Iman Fandi

Iman Fandi’s new single takes a new approach to life’s disappointments. A common theme in music is that the artist’s life sucks, and therefore they have to feel sad about it. Fandi’s new release, however, claims the exact opposite. Her point of view is that yeah, life sucks and might hit you down, so hit it right back with a baseball bat. Her sarcastic tone and rebellious attitude shine through in this song, and it fits right in with the rest of her music. She is unapologetically loud and honest, which ties into her energetic-pop genre. Her music is similar to that of Sabrina Carpenters, Olivia Rodrigo, and Dua Lipa- a girlboss attitude and empowering lyrics to match.

The chorus is the focal point of this song. Fandi sings, “When life sucks make you feel so bad, / Hit it right back like a baseball bat, / Go whoop TKO smack, / Hit it right back like a baseball bat”. She accepts that life is not sunshine and roses, but knows that she can beat it. She later goes on to mention some of these issues, like complaining about the smell on the subway and lack of funds in her bank account. However, she lets none of this get her down, and repeats the chorus, taking a dominant attitude against the world’s trials and tribulations. The song has an upbeat and electronic soundscape, and the cadence of the lyrics follows right along with these pop tones.

Iman Fandi is a 23-year-old singer from Singapore. She has taken Southeast Asia’s music world by storm, and has only just begun. She is currently working under Universal Music, and has released five singles with them. Her first single, “Timeframe”, was released in 2021 and broke over 100,000 streams in the first two weeks of release. Its face-paced rise to the top proves just how talented she truly is, and how much listeners love her music. She also works as a model, and has partnered with big names such as Louis Vuitton, YSL Beauty, and Coach. Along with all of her endeavors, she is currently working on her first full length album, and hopes to get it out by 2024.
