Review: "Better Than You" - Maggie Andrew

Maggie Andrew’s feisty new single is a cheeky nod to her ex-partner and all their pitiful flaws. Throughout “Better Than You,” Andrew confesses her negative traits and the things she dislikes about herself. She acknowledges that no one is perfect, especially herself. The first verse explores all her flaws, from minor mishaps to major faults. But the chorus reveals the hook that, despite all this, she is still “better than [them].” This leads into the second verse, where she begins calling out her former partner’s flaws and her candid feelings about them. Without spelling out why, she reveals that she is livid with how they treated her and who their true character turned out to be. After the break-up, Andrew has finally come to the realization that after all this time, she is not the problem—they are. With “Better Than You,” Andrew eloquently expresses her justifiable rage through the sarcastic lyrics and edgy production.

“Better Than You” has a fiery production that perfectly complements Andrew’s angsty narrative. The song kicks off with a muted guitar and bass playing the melody together that continues into the first verse. The second half of the verse introduces the electric guitar and a bass drum as the song builds into the electrifying punk rock chorus. Additional drums and a bass pick up while the guitars play only power chords, enhancing the edgy lyrics. At the end of the chorus, a second guitar playing the melody is added to bring a powerful emphasis to the post-chorus. The instrumentation stays consistent for the remainder of the track to maintain the high-energy, angsty atmosphere. In the final chorus, only the original guitar and vocals are heard to end the track. Then, Andrew closes out the song with her vocals singing, “I’m so better than you.” With “Better Than You,” Andrew ingeniously matches the cheeky lyrics with the powerful production to create an unforgettable, confidence-boosting track.
