There's something good that can be taken from any kind of bad situation. Experiences help us learn, and the difficult ones are the ones we learn from the most. It makes you stronger and a better person when you get through those tough moments. One of those things people go though as a part of life are breakups. You learn lessons about yourself when you realize that someone isn't what you wanted, and you know what to look for and what to do better next time you meet somebody special. "Built Me" by Josh Tepper is directed at an ex-love that didn't end so well, but ultimately made you even better for whoever you're going to love next. Instead of letting a toxic relationship ruin you, take the hurt that you had and turn it into a journey to find something that is right for you.
"Built Me" by Josh Tepper takes modern pop and nostalgic, early-2000's RnB to create an easy-going and ear-catching track. The relatable lyrics and uncomplicated groove are a recipe for being stuck in your head all day and night. Josh's raw and emotional vocals really help set the tone for the song. It's almost bittersweet; sad, yet empowering to listen to this song. You're losing someone you deeply cared about, but now you're also prepared to have a healthy relationship with someone else who is better for you. The words, "when you were breaking me down you were building me up for another", really make the purpose of the song all come together. There's a duet version of this song with actress and singer/songwriter, Madisyn Shipman which gives the song a whole new feeling of hearing the mutual pain from each side of the relationship. You can listen to that version of the song here!
