Review: "Caffeine" - Hannah Duckworth

Caffeine by Hannah Duckworth Cover Art

Coming in hot as a steamy morning pick-me-up, Hannah Duckworth’s new song “Caffeine” uses its title as a metaphor for the way a relationship feels. For some people, being a whole and functioning human is entirely dependent on their morning and afternoon and evening cup of coffee. We become addicted to the routine of letting it lift us through every day life. For the speaker of this song, it’s their partner that keeps them going. The lyrics “to get through the day I need you running through my veins” give that visceral idea that the speaker’s partner lives in their body, reaching every living part of them. In the chorus, the lyrics show just how unique the connection is, saying “you’re the only thing that makes me feel this rush”. An addictive excitement comes through the message that the love “Caffeine” describes is a vice the speaker will never quit. Intimate and invigorating dependency pulses through the relationship in this song, leaving listeners lifted by the jolt of caffeinated romance.

With instrumentals and vocals keeping a fast-paced feel throughout, “Caffeine” infuses its sound with a whirlwind of energy pulsing through the lyrics. Guitar acts as a cool and steady background to the frantically expressive vocals that emulate a caffeinated urgency through the verses. Percussion keeps the song progressing, speeding up with the rapid lyrics. Rounded vocals and louder guitar amp up the sound in the chorus, with Hannah’s vocalizing and the grungy instrumentals bringing a pop-rock energy. In the middle of the chorus, the frazzled quickness of the words slows down to a pulsing emphasis on each syllable, along with punchy guitar emphasizing every word, before racing back to that invigorating speed. Listeners will love the stimulating feeling that comes from this souped-up serenade.
