Review: “Can’t Say No” - James Heresy

What is more important? Retaining a healthy mental health or keeping a toxic relationship alive? Well, musical artist James Hersey wrote a song to hopefully help you answer that question. His new single, “Can’t Say No,” was inspired by a conversation he had with a friend, where she told him she was struggling trying to figure out how to keep up a healthy relationship and mental health. The lyrics, which are extremely catchy, are also very real and relatable. “I’m a sucker in your game,” and “You only let me down, leave me low, begging on the ground as I watch you go,” are found in the chorus, and are arguably some the strongest lyrics in the  song. It’s a situation that unfortunately, many of us have had to deal with, so hearing lyrics like this can really help out things into perspective.

The style of the song is pretty upbeat compared to the message behind it. It’s clear that it’s a pop song, and in some instances, it maybe wouldn’t work. However, I love how everything comes together In this song. I think that everything is paced well, and Heresy’s voice is only the cherry on top of the cake. He has a lot of clarity in his voice, and I found that while I usually find most of my interest piqued In the instrumentals, it was his voice that really drew me in. I want to say I’ve listened to this song on repeat for a good few hours now, and I just can’t get tired of it. It’s very unique, and made the song even better.

James Heresy has been making music since his late teens, and was quickly labeled an established indie artist. His song “Coming Over” went viral in 2015, and since then, he has released multiple songs to the public. Last year, Heresy created his own label with his friends, and is currently working toward releasing the music they’ve all made together. His upcoming album, Let It Shine, is set to be released on September 15. Following the release, Heresy is to perform at a variety of different music festivals, including Coachella and Lollapalooza. “Can’t Say No” is a song that, in my honest opinion, has the potential to be a viral hit. I can’t wait to hear what James Heresy releases next!
