Review: "Chris Pratt" - Róisín O

In the grand scheme of life, the simple pleasures tend to get overshadowed by the simple horrors. Every once in a while, a reminder is needed that life is beautiful. Even the tiniest moments can be the most special, like something as small as dancing around the kitchen in the middle of the night with the love of your life. Róisín O’s most recent song release “Chris Pratt” is the exact reminder that every overwhelmed person needs. Sometimes you have to take a step back and smell the roses, and learn to cherish the things that make you happy, no matter how small. This is a song about love and appreciation, and the cohesive pop and eb and flow mimics O’s intense feelings. The song itself mimics what it's like to realize you are in love- the feeling of being on top of the world.

A seemingly odd reference to an actor in the title, Róisín O has said that this song is about her own experience with the boy she fell in love with at 17. They stood in the kitchen at a house party, and he taught her the words to the song “Night Train” by Guns and Roses. He was the spitting image of Christ Pratt, and she calls him ‘the coolest guy I had ever met’. They have found their way back to each other, and now their love is the perfect example of a simple pleasure. It is real and uplifting, and their collection of songs to dance to in the kitchen has only grown. The track is fast, but slows down to almost just the vocal line when O hits the bridge, truly highlighting what she has to say. She sings, “Cuz I had this feeling since we were young / And they all tried to say we're too young to be in love / but I see us now, and I see us at 81, too old to be this in love, still playing Madonna in the kitchen”. She is beyond confident that their love is one to last, and that they will still be appreciating each other through what brought them together- the simple act of dancing in the kitchen.

Róisín O is an Irish singer - songwriter, who has gathered almost 60,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. She has headlined tours around Ireland, Germany, the US, and Australia, and has shared the stage with many notable artists. Hitting the ground running with her debut album, ‘The Secret Life of Blue’, O’s personal style has developed and strengthened, and she is truly not an artist to miss. She is certainly a standout pop singer, and has a certain pull and emotion to her voice that is not seen in many artists nowadays. Her music is real and impactful, and listeners can tell she puts her entire heart on the line through her work.
