Callie Young Clark Kent Cover Art

I love when artists use one form of media to inspire them to write a song or even a whole album. “Clark Kent” by Callie Young is exactly that. Callie takes the story of Superman and instead of focusing on the fact that he has these super powers, it focusing on the human elements that Clark Kent brings to the character. This song also expresses the idea of a love so incredible it has to be from out of this world. Comparing those two ideas is not only musically intelligent but just shows how far we can take stories we’ve heard a million times before while keeping them fresh and new.

The song starts off with a guitar and more folk sound than what the rest of the song ends up giving us. Once the chorus hits, it launches us into a pop song completely changing how the listener hears it. The lyrics are really smart and continue to tie the Superman analogies throughout. Callie’s smarts remind me of Sabrina Carpenter where things can feel light, fun and yet still so vulnerable. My favorite lyrics are "You could be from Venus or maybe from Mars" hinting at the person that she's interested in is out of this world to some degree. Truly, hearing "Clark Kent" shows Callie Young's intelligence and care behind their lyrics.

Callie Young is an indie folk-pop artist originally from Southwest Colorado but is now based out of Nashville. Callie's music is a blend of their roots from their upbringing, meshing folk and country while experimenting with indie pop. Callie's talent at capturing raw vulnerability comes from their real life experiences. This allows Callie's target audience to become much broader as their just speaking to the human experience. Their also in a solo project where they co-founded an alt-rock band with their brother. Thus far, Callie is breaking into the industry little by little but each time making great strides like opening for the Bellamy Brothers as well as Little Big Town.
