Review: "Cleveland" - maryjo

For maryjo, her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio will forever hold a special place in her heart. It's the place where she was raised, learned to sing and discovered her true aspirations before making the decision to audition for American Idol, and eventually going on to become a talented hitmaker. Moving states to pursue her dream and make music for millions around the world is something she loves, but deep in her heart, she misses the place of where it all started. In her new single "Cleveland", maryjo reminisces about her city, evoking emotions as she shares the little details that she misses of it and reflects on how moving away has transformed her life.

As the song begins, an emotional melody on the guitar sets the tone, which creates a pleasing and personal experience. Maryjo questions who she is, now that she lives in an entirely different state, with not only new people surrounding her, but millions of people watching her as she becomes a growing artist: “Who am I? Who am I supposed to be? When I’ve got everybody’s eyes on me.” As she has people watching, listening and expecting things from her, it’s hard for her to remember who she was and what she liked before the big lifestyle change after being on American Idol, blowing up on TikTok, moving states, and performing. She does acknowledge loving what she’s doing and how big of a blessing it is to be able to live her dreams, but it's hard for her to pretend that she doesn’t miss where it all started in Cleveland and what she was used to: “I know that I’m living a dream, but lately its been hard for me to breathe. When I’m walking alone down these dark city streets, all I’m thinking is I should be in Cleveland.” Maryjo wrote this song when she was going through this big transition, unsure of how to deal with and go about it. This song was about her journey of following her dreams and the rollercoaster of emotions that came with finding her identity during that time. She’s happy with how much she’s grown since she’s written this song, and is excited to grow even more on this journey.

Maryjo is a pop singer-songwriter from Cleveland, Ohio. Back in 2021, she was on Season 19 of American Idol where she made it onto the next round without any prior performance experience! She currently has nearly 200,000 monthly Spotify listeners with her most streamed songs being "Carpet" that's reaching 2 million streams, as well as “Don’t Call Me,” which has over 1 million streams.
