Review: "Cruel World" - Mathias Julin

“Cruel World” is the newest single from Mathias Julin, a song about being hesitant before beginning a new relationship due to being betrayed in the past. When your trust is broken when it comes to romance, it’s difficult to regain that when you meet someone who seems too good to be true. Julin has a hard time processing how this person he has met can be so special, when there are so many people who don’t care about how they affect others. He’s been heartbroken before and doesn’t want to be again, so he is taking great precaution when it comes to his new relationship, leading him to be very wary of putting his trust in someone new regarding his feelings.
The emotions Julin sings about in “Cruel World” are translated into the intense and atmospheric power-pop production and instrumentation styles that highlight the incredible elements of the song. When Julin sings, you can feel exactly the heartbreak and painful experiences he’s conveying with every note. This is amplified by the extraordinary work with the drums that encapsulate the entirety of “Cruel World”, as well as the other essential instruments that were used to create this single. This also includes the delicate guitar strums that are featured in different sections of the song, which also convey powerful yet bittersweet emotions.
Mathias Julin is a singer and songwriter. He started out posting covers on TikTok, his most popular ones being “Counting Stars” by OneRepublic and “Pompeii” by Bastille, where everyone learned of Julin’s immense creativity and talent. He began his studio career in May 2025 with the release of his debut single “No Souls”. It served as the beginning track of his debut EP Someday that he released in November of that year. He’s also made other amazing songs, such as “Laughed At My Jokes”, “Could You Lie”, and “Where We Are”. Julin is, without a doubt, a virtuoso and a one-of-a-kind artist that’s bringing back the popular music of the early 2010s.
