Review: "Dancing On Roses" - Linn Willner

Roses are beautiful. The flower comes in rich colors and smells good. When you look closer though, you’ll see the thorns. In her new single, “Dancing on Roses,” Linn Willner uses this metaphor to examine the human connection. It feels great to be loved, cared for, and wanted. Even so, all relationships have their imperfections, or thorns. They are inevitable and how we handle them can make or break the connection altogether. Willner wrote multiple versions of this track, each of them examining a different phase of a relationship. This final version is truly captivating because we get a raw, unfiltered look at the imperfections of the human connection.

I really liked the instrumentation of this song because it is simple. It consists of a piano that is later layered with drums. This is a good stylistic choice because it really lets the emotion in the lyrics and Willner’s voice take center stage. There is raw emotion all throughout the track, but it is really prominent in the chorus. Willner sings, “the truth and the lies that you always told me, I dance on roses until I will bleed.” To me, this line is saying that we try to ignore the imperfections for as long as we can. Blood is also a common indicator of life, so it is like being snapped back to reality. With that being said, we shouldn’t ignore these imperfections. Rather, we should work through them to strengthen the connection in a relationship.

Linn Willner is a singer/songwriter from Sweden. When she was just four years old, Willner wrote her first song and discovered her passion for music. She wants her music to bring people together. “Dancing On Roses” is Willner’s first release of 2023. If you want to hear more of her, check out her 2022 single, “No into a Maybe.” It is another breakup song that talks about an ex not leaving you alone. In contrast to “Dancing On Roses,” the song is a lot more upbeat and very gritty. It is very apparent that Willner is letting out her anger. I really enjoyed reviewing Willner’s music and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next. Follow all of her socials down below to learn more about her and stay up-to-date on new music!
