Review: "Dead of Night" - Anna Curreen

Anna Curreen Dead of Night Cover Art

In the newly released "Dead of Night", Anna Curreen captures the many uncertainties, hopeless stares at the ceiling, and late-night questions that flood our heads whenever romance is involved. Curreen sings of that vulnerable moment when love meets anxiety and we can't help but lie awake and wonder where things went wrong. Despite its heavy subject, "Dead of Night" is compelling, not only throwing the listener into a pool of unresolved feelings and nonexistent closure but also reassuring them that they aren't struggling alone. When someone begins to gradually distance themselves over time, one is left battling the grief caused by the emotionally unavailable partner, and Curreen masterfully translates our helplessness into song in her attempts to not let these feelings consume her. "Dead of Night" confronts the uncomfortable as we try to make peace with the present all while reminiscing about the past.

The first sound that enters our ears is a smooth instrumental with a strong R&B vibe; it's laid-back, but just angsty enough to evoke those feelings of romantic distress and set the tone for the rest of the song. The periodic snaps in the background, along with the slow, steady pace are paired with passionate lyrics that have us anticipating the chorus. Curreen's clean tone has an underlying sense of heartache, and as she pours her soul into the song, she manages to convey the dilemma of having loved and cared for someone. Throughout the song, she vocalizes and riffs softly, creating an emotional feeling with a profound impact, as words aren't always needed to make us feel and understand a song's meaning. Anna Curreen's "Dead of Night", in all of its ethereal harmonies and graceful charm, does a beautiful job of capturing the tension, complexity, and chaos of momentary romance.

Anna Curreen is a rising pop artist from the U.S., finding her niche in a unique mix of R&B and traditional pop. First releasing songs back in 2020, Curreen has since expanded her discography with popular additions like "Compassion" and "Not Jealous" that have reached a combined number of nearly 40k streams! Curreen is best known for her vulnerable lyrics and emotive deliveries, both showing off her beautiful voice and talent when it comes to writing meaningfully authentic lyrics. Fans from all over are excited to see the direction she takes in the near future, producing more sentimental songs to stick in our heads! As always, stay updated and follow the socials below!
