Review: "Different People" - JESSIA

JESSIA’s new track “Different People '' is 2024’s new breakup anthem. It’s about the intrusive thoughts that inevitably come with the end of a relationship. As if the breakup itself isn’t difficult enough, JESSIA also accurately depicts the vicious cycle of emotions you deal with that make you wonder what your ex is doing, if they’re seeing someone else, or if they’re thinking about you as much as you’re thinking about them. Her lyrics, “I don’t have control over my heart, no // I don’t wanna wonder where you are tonight // Like are you kissing different people // Trying not to say my name to different people,” perfectly capture the devastating grief stage of a breakup. The song seems to encompass some feelings of anger, mixed with the inescapable yearning for the person that you know no longer serves a positive purpose in your life.
“Different People” really lets the lyrics tell the story. Starting off with a simple piano in the background, the soft ache heard in JESSIA’s voice from the very beginning, really sets the tone for a classic breakup song. Heading into the second verse, the synth and drum beats kick, further building the tension and matching the intensity of the intrusive thoughts that JESSIA reflects on in her latest single. What I loved most about this specific song was that it wasn’t the typical breakup song we hear, where the artist is ripping their ex to shreds. Instead, “Different People” is the kind of breakup track that explores vulnerability and normalizes the difficult thoughts and feelings that come with relationships or lack thereof.
JESSIA is proof that you don’t need a record label to be successful in the music industry. The Canadian pop singer-songwriter burst onto the music scene in 2021 with her viral single “I’m not Pretty.” The song, which was a massive success, racked in millions of streams and spawned a remix that featured Grammy-nominated pop singer Bebe Rexha. Under her former label, Republic Records, JESSIA released her acclaimed debut EP, How Are You?, in October 2021. She also won Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the 2022 Juno Awards. Now working as an independent artist, JESSIA has continued to captivate audiences with her fun, eccentric pop melodies and relatable lyricism.
