Review: "Done For" - Christabel

Christabel has released her new song, “Done For.” The last single before releasing her debut album INTUITION, Christabel goes into a toxic attachment that makes her done for. One of the more emotionally-heavy moments on INTUITION, Christabel explores how her partner “[doses her] up / [getting her] sick on [her partner’s] love,” not being able to leave the relationship. Describing her partner as “the only cure,” Christabel finds that the only key to her problems in the relationship is her partner. Wishing that her partner would improve upon the traits that “rip on [her] heart,” there’s a sense of wanting to leave this relationship but Christabel finds herself “paralyzed” within the love her partner gives her.
“Done For” explores dynamics within a relationship that is bad for someone, but feels too good to leave–an experience that listeners can relate to. While this isn’t a niche experience, Christabel turns the impact of the relationship into her own spin, using medical metaphors and likening the relationship to an illness that poisons her overtime. With these metaphors, Christabel shows her songwriting skills prominently, with “Done For” being the latest edition to her ever-growing discography. With “Done For” being the last single before INTUITION, Christabel captures listeners into the album’s world effectively and allows them to fully feel a taste of its sound before the release date.
Christabel is a Kiwi singer-songwriter. Hailing from Tāmaki Makaurau, Christabel started writing songs at the age of five, finding the love for expressing her emotions through music. After deciding to leave school early to pursue a career in music, Christabel found her big break on the show Popstars New Zealand, where she was ultimately crowned the winner of her season in 2021. After this win, her debut single “Ankle Deep” made waves and peaked at #9 on the New Zealand Official Music Charts. As Christabel continues to make waves in the music space and continue to chart higher and higher, fans are eager for INTUITION, set for release later on this year.
