Review: "Fast" - Cole Jacob

Cole Jacob Fast Cover Art

Live in the shoes of your past, present, and future with “Fast” from artist Cole Jacob. “Fast” details the love a parent feels for their child, going beyond the threshold of most “typical” pop-adjacent song descriptions. Starting off with light piano, the introduction to the song is heartfelt and beautifully personal. Jacob matches the tone of the piano exactly – his voice sounding almost like an instrument itself alongside delicately tapped piano keys. Beyond the first stage of the song, Jacob leans into detail-heavy lyrics dedicated to both his child and parents & children all around. This stage of the song highlights the overarching themes of “Fast”: growth; love; connection; family. Not only does this display the true nature of this lovable and lighthearted tune but additionally shows the talent & care Jacob put into making the track.

On top of bringing a real, defining topic to the table with “Fast”, Jacob includes lyrics that are both finely detailed and well-written. Examples of clever metaphors, such as Jacob representing the side of a road while his child, representing a moving car, passes him by are just one subject of proof that Jacob is a gifted songwriter with good heart & intention. Throughout the song, he mentions common themes that many parents experience but are not talked often about. Themes such as worrying about missing out on certain aspects of their child’s life, not doing enough, attempting not to take things for granted, etc., trouble him but also remind him to spend time with his child and savor that time with them. These are things that not only speak heavily to parents but additionally to people who do not have children – regardless, the nature of the song speaks for itself and can touch the heart of anyone. This song especially spoke to me through its use of pace along with Jacob’s lyrics, starting off with light piano and picking up to stronger vocals and bringing a more “floaty” and multi-layered instrumental experience. While love is not a difficult thing to depict, parent-child relationships are not often discussed as much as other kinds of connections – with “Fast”, you are thrown back & forth throughout time and reminded of love in all its forms.

Cole Jacob is a singer-songwriter from Alberta, Canada. His music mainly includes a chill, relaxed vibe with heartfelt intent. Jacob is a Christian and holds faith close to his heart. Recently, Jacob became a father and has incorporated his experience as a parent into his music making process. Additionally, he channels his love for his wife into his song making and writes about the love from that relationship. Jacob released his first single, “Without Love”, in 2019 and put out his first album, “Neither Here Nor There”, in 2023. While his content has changed over time, he consistently creates songs from the heart that are made with pure intent and admiration for the people in his life.
