Review: "Forget About Me" - Annie Anna

Forget About Me by Annie Anna Cover Art

"Forget About Me" by Annie Anna is a nostalgic tune that pays homage to the vastness of the world around us, putting identity on the backburner to admire nature and the passing of time. This song shares several themes with common ideas in country music, while also reflecting its sound. The lyrics soak up the comfort of memories, and bring up images like an "open road". The song begins by taking some beautiful natural imagery with the words, "underneath a crystal sky, winds rustle through the trees", before the narrator explains their reflections. Themes of nihilism come through the speaker's understanding that their past and future are so much smaller than the world around them. The chorus is a testament to these ideas, ending with the words: "this world kept on turning and forgot about me". The word "forgot" does not hold any sort of sadness, rather it seems resolute, matter-of-fact, and almost comforting. The speaker goes on to continuously ground themself in nature, even in memory, like in the second verse with the phrase "the summer of '16, mountains rushing by so quickly". While the lyrics mention people in the speakers' life, the only specifics that come are in the details of the landscape or scenery. The Earth seems to be the most powerful soul in this song.

The sound of "Forget About Me" is down-to-earth, with simple piano and acoustic guitar producing a whole and heartening tune. The instrumentals are a blend of warm strumming and note patterns that add an uplifting and soothing mood to the song. Annie's voice brings alive the folky comfort of this track, as it is bright and feminine, with a little bit of a country twang. She sings with a reflective tone, as though she is telling a story. As I listened to the song, I found I swayed along to the catchy tune. The sound brings a warming sense of nostalgia that can resonate differently for everyone. For me, it made me feel grounded and like I should listen to this song on a walk in the sun.
