Review: “Gap In Your Teeth” - JT Foley

Often, I find myself trying to change for others. Whether in a platonic or a romantic relationship, it’s hard just to be myself around people, sometimes. So, I really connected with “Gap In Your Teeth” by JT Foley. This song is the third single off of the upcoming album for singer and songwriter, JT Foley. It’s about making yourself look and feel smaller in a relationship, while also molding yourself to be someone you're not; Someone that another person wants you to be. This is especially telling in this lyric in the chorus, “Don't mind me! / I can squeeze in between the gap in your teeth / Don't mind me! / Pretty please / I can be what you want me to be".

When I first read the title for this song, I thought it was going to be more mellow, and even on the verge of melancholy. Instead, I was introduced to an upbeat sound with incredible and captivating lyrics. Lots of incredible production work went into this song. It actually sounds electrifying, in a way - which I love. I think giving the story behind this song and these lyrics actually helped me to feel the music better. I could feel the emotion, but I wasn’t emotional… if that makes sense. It's a juxtaposition, so that you're able to relate to the not-so-positive situation of the lyrics, but still feel uplifted by the soundscape and cathartics of the instrumentation and production.

JT Foley is an LA-based singer and songwriter who first began writing songs when she was 8 years old. She is currently signed with Arthouse Entertainment, and is set to release her upcoming EP early next year! Foley takes musical inspiration from artists such as Griff and MUNA, but still has an incredibly unique sound. Today, Foley has an average of nearly 30,000 monthly streams on Spotify, but that number only continues to rise. She was featured on SLANDER’s single, "High Voltage" - a song which would go on to get over a million streams on the platform. I thoroughly enjoyed “Gap In Your Teeth”, and I think y’all will too. Go and stream the song everywhere, today!
