Review: "god has a sense of humor" - GAYLE

Up until now, GAYLE’s releases have been high-energy, angsty rock anthems. However, in her latest single, “god has a sense of humor”, she brings out her emotional side. The song tackles one of life’s hardest questions: what is the reason for existence? GAYLE wants to have hope for the future—hope for eternity. She is teetering off of a thin line, trying to balance the pessimistic and optimistic outlooks on life and why we are put on this earth. When the song starts, GAYLE does not waste any time on letting the audience know what the song is about. She begins the song with the insightful lyrics, “When I was 13// A friend of mine died// That’s when I realized// That we don’t live forever.” The passing of someone her age, especially when she was so young, opened her eyes to the philosophical questions about life. In the chorus, she leans into the optimistic side of her ideologies. She believes that people are not inherently good nor bad, but that we are all just trying to make it through this scary world in one piece. At the end of the chorus, she drops the incredibly clever hook that, “God’s got a sense of humor// And I’m not in on the joke.” GAYLE makes listeners reconsider with “god has a sense of humor” and reevaluate their own opinions on the matter.

Rather than a high energy anthem, GAYLE slows down her traditional vibe to match the melancholy lyrics in “god has a sense of humor”. The opening of the song begins with a beautiful piano melody that sets the tone of the song, instantly putting the listener into the intimate scene GAYLE has painted. As the song progresses, the bass guitar subtly begins in the background before the drums make their entrance. The drums, eventually led by the ride cymbal, add to the light airy production. The lyric video that accompanies the song provides for another thought-provoking addition to the track. In the video, the lyrics are written in a font that is similar to what a young child may write. The resemblance to a child’s handwriting symbolizes innocence—the kind that GAYLE lost at thirteen years old. “god has a sense of humor” is an emotional addition to an overall angsty discography that highlights GAYLE’s impressive range.
