Review: "Greener" - Eleven Point Two

Eleven Point Two’s latest release “Greener” is a classically positive and enticing love song.  Self aware of its own repetitive nature, but uncaring, the piece references well known sayings like the one found in its title “the grass is always greener on the other side” as well as the most well known love story of all time, Romeo and Juliet. There isn’t a reason to modernize these original emotions or demean the value of simple sayings, Eleven Point Two instead puts a modern, pop twist on the love song with an air of optimism.  Every line is sung with care and expressive, raw joy.  These themes also tie back to the original topic of the song, pining after someone, loving from a distance- as is implied by the referenced saying.  Of course it feels dreamy and perfect, he’s staring at this greener grass throughout.

The song begins with a dreamy, distant beat that introduces the perspective of the narrator, pulling the listener into his idealistic view.  As he begins singing, it’s slowly and in simple statements that offer a starting point, introducing the reason for desiring a different life, or different person.  His voice perfectly encapsulates the tone the lyrics express, seamlessly sounding more fulfilled once he begins describing this imagined romance.  The music picks up with this change in voice, sounding indie and upbeat.  Towards the end of the song, his voice becomes an instrument offering powerful background vocals that tie the instrumentals together.  The piece ends on a hopeful note by repeating that romanticized chorus “It’s happily ever after in my head but the grass is greener where you are”.

Eleven Point Two is a duo formed by two brothers, Jon and Taylor Siegel.  Originally hailing from Grand Haven, Michigan the two moved to L.A. in 2016 where they would attend Moorpark College together.  At their start, they were writing songs in their garage as merely a hobby, but as it became more they were left having to decide between the path they began with their education and what they had grown to love: creating music.  Thankfully, they decided on the latter and left school to pursue it full time.  In 2019 they released their first album and have since released three singles as well as “Escape Velocity”, their latest album featuring “Greener”.  Stream it below and follow their social media accounts to stay updated.
