Review: "Had A Heart" - KAT MARCELLA

The word “heart” gains a new meaning in the single “Had a Heart” by KAT MARCELLA. The song’s title means having a significant other, and complications of a love triangle become the core of the lyrics. Marcella was in a relationship with someone, but happened to fall for someone else who just got broken up with. However, Marcella did not want to leave the relationship she was in, so she only stayed friends with the person she was secretly in love with. Eventually, she realized that her feelings were reciprocated when her crush began to show signs that they had fallen for her as well. This was the precursor to the end of Marcella’s relationship.
“Had a Heart” is an alt-pop song with guitar chords on the forefront. The production carries chill vibes throughout, and is reminiscent of lo-fi and easy-listening music, but with trap elements. Alongside these components, the reverberated synths and instruments add another layer that is of the indie pop genre. Listening to this song is the perfect way to spend the time in the period between spring and summer. You can just imagine you and your friends going out to the dock during sunset when the sky is a swirl of pastel colors that reflect off the lake that you all go swimming in. This is such a lovely song, which is supported even more by Marcella’s amazing vocals.
KAT MARCELLA is a music artist from Brooklyn, New York. She began her music career in December 2020 with the release of her debut single “meet me halfway”. She has also released other amazing songs in addition to her debut and “Had a Heart”, such as “cuando tú quieras”, “Girls”, and “I’ll Be There”. She is set to perform at FirstLive in Brooklyn on May 30, 2025. She has also performed live previously, including at Brooklyn Music Kitchen.
