Review: "Happy Birthday" - Herine

This song, “Happy Birthday” by Herine, is an indie-pop song all about how much you grow and change from year to year. Set with the motif of birthdays, Herine sings about how much you live through without even realizing it. With lyrics like “you’d be surprised by the things you outgrow” and “even heartbreak is a miracle ‘cause it’s crazy that you feel at all,” she gets right to the heart of the matter. Yeah, sometimes you may feel like you waste your life as it flies by - like the lyric “one more year to do what you said you would before 25” - but in truth, everyday of your life you live and learn and love. And that’s enough to make everything worthwhile.
“Happy Birthday” is a soft song that ranges from acoustic to more synth-pop style in order to highlight both the delicate melody and the lushness of Herine’s vocals. Starting off with a simple strum melody and some background notes of people saying “happy birthday,” the song brings you into it slowly. Overall, fans of the sound of the 1975, Alexander 23, and the Bleachers will appreciate the smooth wistfulness of Herine’s “Happy Birthday.” It’s already a favorite of mine.
