Review: "Hell & Never Back" - Bellah Mae

This song, “Hell & Never Back” by Bellah Mae is a rousing pop anthem about the difficulties of heartbreak and trying to move on after a relationship has ended. Even if you know the person was bad for you, or you knew it wouldn’t last, letting go of someone can be hard, but it can also be very freeing. Especially when that person was never going to be the one to give you what you needed. With lyrics like “I spent a life waiting for you to change” and “made me believe I was heading to heaven,” Bellah Mae captures this dilemma perfectly. It’s so easy to end up wasting time on someone you think is going to change, but they never do. But the moment you realize that and let go, you can finally move on.

“Hell & Never Back” is a catchy pop song that uses strong vocals and a country influence to keep the listener engaged throughout. Starting off with an echoing effect, Bellah Mae’s voice accompanied by the soft instruments catch your attention immediately, especially through the first verse, when her bright but smooth vocals make the message of the song clear right away. Tension builds as you reach the first chorus, the backing melody picking up intensity. This intensity remains throughout the next verse, naturally continuing to build until the bridge, where all the tension slows before breaking in the last rendition of the chorus. Overall, with “Hell & Never Back”, Bellah Mae manages the difficult feat of making a song bright and upbeat while still sharing an emotional and personal story.
