A part of being human is having an insatiable appetite for things that we may not need—even things that can harm us. The Foxies address this self-destructive phenomenon in their latest single, “I Don’t Wanna Want It”. Despite knowing that what they are craving is toxic, they still invite it in and revel in the danger. Although this song could be about anything, The Foxies hone in on toxic relationships with people they care for deeply. “I Don’t Wanna Want It” is composed of lyrics that highlight this “self-destructive lust” that they want to resist, but for some reason cannot let go of. In the chorus, the lyrics reveal these hazardous behaviors. The band sings, “You give me scars, I let them bleed// You lit the match, I’m gasoline// It’s making me numb, is that what you want?// ‘Cause I don’t wanna want it.” Not only are they aware of this toxic one-way street, but they believe this person actively wants to tear them down. “I Don’t Wanna Want It” addresses a sensitive topic and allows listeners to release their emotions.
“I Don’t Wanna Want It” is an upbeat pop-punk song with a dark background. The lyrics are remarkably vulnerable and gloomy, but the production is lively and intense. Writing the song was a cathartic experience for band members, Jake Ohlbaum and Julia Lauren Bullock, resulting in a banger that releases their anger. The song begins with a soft guitar riff that increasingly intensifies as the song transitions into the pre-chorus. This is when the drums begin, reflecting the classic build up found in pop-punk. Together the two instruments, paired with Bullock’s electrifying vocals, lead up to the chorus where the song explodes with emotion. The melody, written by Ohlbaum, is a memorable tune that gets listeners screaming and head-banging along. “I Don’t Want To Want It” is another prime example of The Foxies impeccable talent and their amazing contribution to the pop-punk revival.
