Every once in a while, it is healthy to let your struggles go. After all, you will be more equipped to face them with a clear mind. In her new upbeat pop track, “Let You Go,” Sophie Gray sings about getting over a breakup. I would assume she has done everything beforehand, from ripping up the pictures to blocking them on social media. She now wants to have a fun night with her friends. This seems to be working for a little bit. However, with her inhibitions low, thoughts of lost love come rushing back. Maybe she wasn’t completely over her ex after all. Gray’s experience just goes to show that the only way to truly leave your struggles behind is to face them head on.
The lyrics and instrumentation of the song are very contrasting. On one hand, the instrumentation is upbeat with a great bass line throughout. I particularly liked the dance break in the chorus. On the other hand, the lyrics talk about Gray’s struggles of getting over a breakup. Her friends are having a good time while she is stuck in her thoughts about lost love. The line at the end of the chorus sums up the message quite nicely, “And I’m sick of living with your ghost, but I’m never gonna let you go.” I think this contrast does a great job of illustrating the war within Gray’s mind. She wants to move on from her ex, but she doesn’t want to forget the good times either. This is a common obstacle when getting over a breakup. I think it’s something a lot of listeners will relate to.
