Breakups are hard. The end of an era can come with tons of feels, and an entire new era to place nostalgia over. You look back, sometimes in regret, and go through the story again in your head, a story you once loved to live. However, sometimes the most healing comes from looking back and discovering all of the negative aspects of the relationship that your rose colored glasses missed. “Little White Lies”, the first single off of Rue Vega’s upcoming debut album, details this feeling and its liberation. “There’s nothing like seeing someone clearly for the first time. I wanted to capture the feeling of realizing how ridiculous the whole situation was, what it felt like to be able to laugh about a breakup I thought I’d be devastated by,” says Vega.

Vega’s tone is light and innocent, however it is far from weak and naive. She has a spunk to her, speaking for women everywhere who feel like the “wool over my eyes” blinded them. The track begins with a melancholic guitar strum, a typical opening of a breakup song. But as Vega’s quick witted lyrics come through, listeners can see that this will be much more uplifting; a song about overcoming heartbreak rather than succumbing to it. She quickly reaches the chorus, in which she sings “Little white lies / Little white lies / Were your disguise / Were your disguise” ... “Rose color glasses lift from my eyes / Clarity came when I said goodbye / Honesty is what brought me to life”. She spares no expense, truly trying to get her antagonist to feel as negatively as she has felt. Instrumentals join her as she reaches the bridge, and with beautiful riffs and words full of confidence, she shares a heartfelt message about growth and acceptance.

Rue Vega prides herself on being imaginative, creative, and unique. Her lyrics create a mystical world, and her songs create different characters, storylines, and experiences. She gives her listeners an escape from the world we live in, and a chance to dip into one without constraints and perfectionism. Based in Boston, she is currently working on her debut album, which “Little White Lies” will be found on. Vega states that she draws inspiration from the “messy honesty of Gracie Abrams, the heartfelt vulnerability of Olivia Rodrigo, and the cinematic soundscape of Billie Eilish”. Three powerhouse female singer-songwriters, Vega takes these inspirations and turns them into a world of music just her own, perfectly unique and enticing.
