Mindy Gledhill explores the emotional journey behind growing up and becoming your inner-child’s carer in “Long Distance Lullaby”. It seems like just yesterday, you were figuring out the world without any help. You remember how your young mind always felt alone and lost, desperate for comfort and love. As a child, all you needed was a comforting lullaby to help you rest easy. As an adult, you are ready to sing it for yourself. Your inner-child is so far away despite them keeping a place in your heart years later. Those years of solitude are long past and what remains within you is a desire to bring peace and care to your younger self. It feels as though your inner-child is just as unreachable as your childhood self. Leaps and bounds through time make it possible to finally bring yourself peace. You have grown to understand that all you craved was a caretaker who would bring you love, time, and help be at rest.

“Long Distance Lullaby” embodies its melancholy narrative through its slow instrumentation and vocals. We are first introduced to simple yet tonally effective piano chords. The light notes, which are soon accompanied by the soft and sweet vocals from Gledhill, encompass the somber narrative of self-realization being told. The instrumentation and melody remain low and mainly unchanged throughout as it serves as a lullaby to herself. As each element plays out in this slowly sweet manner, it is easy to imagine this single as its own lullaby. There are moments, such as the impressively built up bridge, where the piano grows more complex and the vocals become intensified. These passionate moments that break the simple lullaby showcase the high emotional state the narrator finds herself in. These moments serve as breakthroughs where she is finally able to get through to herself and bring herself the comfort and care she craved for.
