Kaleia's has returned with new music that will definitely leave a lasting mark on you. "MAKE IT MEAN SOMETHING" is catchy and upbeat with lyrics that are hard hitting and honest. The song uncovers the layers of a romantic connection, specifically one that is slowly crumbling and falling apart. It feels like the moment right before a big break, where the tension is at its highest and no one is quite sure how to navigate things anymore. "MAKE IT MEAN SOMETHING" recognizes the difficulty of having the emotional closeness built with a romantic partner over time fizzle. The intimacy and honesty becomes slowly replaced by distance and doubt, until there is nothing left to anchor the relationship. The lyric, "Am I even a friend to you? / You're tapping out / Heard it through word of mouth / Am I even your lover? / Was it ever love?" really shows the confusion that remains when a connection's open communication ultimately falls through.
With summer in full swing, what better way to celebrate than with an upbeat, funky song that you can let loose to? "MAKE IT MEAN SOMETHING" immediately opens with a groovy sound that makes it hard to resist dancing and vibing along. The song has a retro vibe, but also maintains a modern sound as well. The alt-pop song is the perfect song to release all pent up frustrations and dance. I could imagine the song fitting on a soundtrack for a romcom and playing during a scene of the main character discovering themself following the tensions of a breakup. Kaleia's vocals on the song feel mesmerizing and something akin to seductive. Her natural vocal ability paired with the grooviness of the instrumentals makes the entire song unforgettable.
Kaleia is a pop singer-songwriter based in Vancouver. She was born in Edmonton and has worked from a young age to craft playful, experimental, and emotionally sharp records. She was raised on artists like The Beach Boys and Stevie Wonder. She was also greatly influenced at home by her mother, who was a touring classical pianist. Her father, the frontman of a band, also greatly inspired her. Her approach to music was rooted equally in discipline and experimentation. Alongside contemporary inspirations such as Tame Impala, Ravyn Lenae, and Leon Thomas, Kaleia draws from a wide range of eras and genres. She combines classic musicality with forward-thinking production. The result is polished, groove-driven pop that feels nostalgic yet distinctly modern.
