Losing connection with someone we once believed would be part of our lives for a plethora of time is a feeling like no other. It leaves us with obstinate feelings of confusion and puts us in a state of self-blame. We flagellate ourselves for the mistakes and actions we made that could have driven this person away from us. Igniting a special kind of connection with someone is an overwhelming feeling, and we instantly feel the potent sparks of an unavoidable fate. However, that strong sense of connection meets a woeful demise that seems just as inevitable. The bond we once had with these people just seems to dwindle and wither like a flower that lacks the necessities it needs to flourish and thrive. All that we are left with are the remnants of what we once had, plagued by memories, that strong feeling of yearning in us that never dissipates, no matter how often we tell ourselves to get over it and move on. Despite the ache we feel, this person, who is a stain in our lives, remains brusque and cavalier to the turmoil we face inwardly. Thus, we are left with the haunting memories of this person until their image and presence wane from our memories. “Memories” by Fox Stevenson is a song that holds the same idea, narrating it into a blend of music and sounds that can truly resonate with listeners who crave authenticity. With lachrymose lyrics like “Wish that I can unlearn you” and “I miss you, you don’t care”, these are words that further pelt us with the reality of our emotions, where we wish to erase this person from our memory, but we have to ruminate with the longing we feel for them and the fact that they don’t care.
The song announces its presence overtly upon the first few seconds of its introduction. It starts off with a blend of sounds that mix to create something upbeat, adding an electronic sense to the pop that thrives in this song. As Stevenson’s voice sets in, we can’t help but offer our rapt attention, his voice acting as the centerpiece, tying all the sounds together in a way that makes the song memorable. The lyrics serve a deep purpose, adding vehemence to such a resonating song, emphatic lyrics that are certain to leave their indelible mark on its listeners, encouraging pensive thoughts from us. I appreciate how raw these lyrics are and how accurate they are when it comes to losing connection with someone who was once special to us. It’s a painful heartache that lingers even after we thought we were over it. "Memories" can serve as a beacon of light to those who are incapacitated by their former connections, solely left with the recollections that never seem to fade. The dynamic drum and upbeat sound almost take away from the fact that this song carries so much emotional struggle. Yet, when we take the opportunity to sit in the lyrics, we realize just how heavy they truly are.
