Review: "Narcissist" - Felicia Lu

When you hear the word ‘narcissist,” who do you think of? This is the question Felicia Lu wants answered as she promotes her infectious new single, “Narcissist”. Throughout the song, Lu exposes her ex-partner for his toxic behavior and textbook narcissism. The singer uses psychological terms such as “love bombing” and “gaslighting” to describe the unrelenting distress she endured. In the pre-choruses, she describes the exact process narcissists use to manipulate their victims as she sings: “First you love bomb me so I'm caught in a dream// Then you gaslight 'til I doubt reality.” This immediately draws the listener's attention before Lu breaks into the chorus, reducing the subject to only ever being a narcissist. Lu constantly amazes me with her witty songwriting, penning jaw-dropping lines that leave me in awe. “Narcissist” is composed of several of these remarkable moments from “No one’s as angry as a narcissist being accused of something they did” to “How can someone you call lover be the poison in your head?” The moment I heard these lyrics, I knew the track was going to be one of my new favorites by the singer. She continues with her insightful and clever storytelling in the bridge. Lu passionately sings “I'll never get the truth out of you// Closest I will get are stories where you// Are the victim or the hero, yeah, you// Love to talk about you really all that you do.” These lyrics are not just truthful anecdotes about the nature of a narcissist. They also serve as a reminder to victims that they are not alone nor are they crazy, like their manipulator has made them believe. Once again, Felicia Lu has used her impressive talent to share her own experiences while conveying such raw, honest human emotions. With her creative and intricate songwriting, Lu continues to solidify her place as one of the best artists of this generation.

Felicia Lu’s discography contains some of the best production I have ever heard. There has not been one single song by the artist that I have not been completely mesmerized by. With her ingenious hooks and enthralling dark-pop soundscapes, Lu knows how to captivate her audiences. In the classic Felicia Lu manner, “Narcissist” blends gut-wrenching vulnerability with energetic production, while containing a uniqueness that stands out from all previous releases. Her ability to keep each song fresh and new, while maintaining a distinctive soundscape that is uniquely hers is admirable and astonishing. Furthermore, “Narcissist” showcases even more of her innate talent. While her stunning voice shines in each of her songs and is one of the first things that drew me to the artist, the new single provides a different side of her voice that I have not heard in her last two years of music. Her lower register always blows me away, and in this song, she does not disappoint. However, in the final chorus, she caught me off guard with her higher range as she belts out powerful vocalizations, emphasizing the fiery lyrics. With Lu’s flawless vocals and clever songwriting, “Narcissist” may be already on its way to becoming one of my top most-played tracks of 2024.
