Review: "Nightmares" - purpl

purpl, "Nightmares," Cover Art

“Nightmares” by purpl is a song about grief and loss. The song alludes to losing someone who took their own life and the pain of having to navigate life without them. The artist writes about feeling the spirit of this person protecting her and guiding her along the way. It’s a beautifully written song about an incredibly difficult topic. But it’s these kinds of songs that are the most meaningful. In particular, the lyrics, “Hard, wish I had been there / Saving you from nightmares / I don’t know, it’s so unfair,” really strike a deep emotional chord. When someone takes their own life, oftentimes friends and family members are left with a lot of unanswered questions and 'what-if’s,' and purpl conveys this in an incredibly tasteful and sensitive way. “Nightmares” is a song that I believe will touch a lot of people, because it definitely touched me.

“Nightmares” is an ethereal, alt-pop track that floods listeners with an array of emotions related to grief and loss. Within the first few seconds, listeners are immediately met with purpl’s delicate, airy vocals that adds to the song’s emotionally vulnerable ambiance. The part that surprised me the most was the slick, R&B-esque beat drop that comes just as purpl gets to the song’s chorus. Mixed with some guitar that is sprinkled throughout, the smooth R&B beat created a fun shift that I wasn’t expecting, but thoroughly enjoyed. However, it was the lyrics that really resonated with me the most. The artist really outdid herself with this song. purpl’s ability to take her own grief and pain and masterfully turn it into a song that many people will be able to relate to, really showcases her incredible talent as a singer-songwriter.

Bristol-based singer and producer purpl is an artist that is dedicated to staying true to herself. Her infectious alt-pop sound caught the attention of UK music enthusiasts from the very beginning. Her 2018 debut single “You Know” was featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday UK playlist and since then, her music has also been featured on Apple’s New Music Daily, Chilled Hits, Bedroom Pop, and other popular playlists – further expanding her reach. With two EPs and dozens of singles under her belt, purpl knows exactly what direction she wants her career to go in. Her new chapter is about making the music she wants to make and judging by the 10 million YouTube plays and over 12,000 monthly Spotify listeners, it appears to be paying off. In 2022, purpl headlined the BBC Introducing live at 60 Million Postcards, Bournemouth, and has performed at other events including The Bristol Takeover at The Bristol Beacon and The Halley X DMY live session in London. Her new EP Nightmares, which features the eponymous title track, is now out on all music streaming platforms.
