Let’s not front… we’ve all been a little… OBSESSED. With this new single off her new EP Dark Side, Jemma Johnson’s hit “Obsessed” will have you feeling that title. If you’re a 90s baby, or a 00’s baby who LOVES the 90s pop/alternative pop scene, this song is definitely for you! The song spills the tea of those overbearing, passionate feelings that are inescapable. It lights a fire within you, reminding listeners of the dangers and fun that come along with such aggressive affection. While this can sound scary, Jemma turns it into a fun, poppy adventure that listeners can strut confidently with. If you’re reading this and thinking of Joe Goldberg from YOU, then you’re in the right mindset!
Starting with a sultry piano, we are instantly getting that 90s vibe. The gritty bass gives a perfect foundation for the drums and consistent tambourine. There is a dry-synth that keeps the beat grounded, letting the vocals be the star of the show. There are lots of things Jemma has going on with the vocals that make me obsessed with this song. The robotic swell that gives Britney Spears and the occasional runs that give Christina Aguilera intertwine beautifully. Leading up to the chorus, the phrasing becomes accelerated, more excited. Giving the listeners an interesting chorus that echoes in between raw and phone-filter lines: “I’m a little obsessed/Do you even know that you’ve got control/I’ve been trying my best/But I can’t resist yeah it’s physical”. Altogether, this masterpiece is revitalizing the iconic pop that has been missing in today’s music.
