Review: "One Breath" - Janet Noh

One Breath by Janet Noh Cover Art

In a beautiful show of reassurance, Janet Noh's song "One Breath" offers listeners a validating musical safe space. With a focus on comfort, the song is a message from one person to another, preaching self-love and compassion. The speaker of the song breaks down ideas of self-doubt in the person their words are supporting, with a powerful message of security and acceptance. Beyond letting a person know that they are important and reaching out to offer support, the song reminds listeners to take time to ground yourself with the words "give me one deep breath". Though life can take turns that feel isolating or unstable, this song is an important reminder to take time to yourself in the moment, acknowledge the struggles you go through, and communicate when you need support.

A percussion-heavy electronic instrumental mix gives a soothing introduction to the track. Janet's resonant vocals smoothly move through highs and lows, moving melismatically through the lyrics of the chorus as the instrumentals fade, letting listeners focus on the singing, with a breathy emphasis on lyrics that feel like reaching out. A post-chorus interlude of punchy electronic instrumentals with a bright, uplifting sound. Listening to the song is a therapeutic experience as it blends soulful vocals with a truly fun sequence of instrumentals, allowing you to take in the message while feeling motivated by the catchy sound.
