Review: "Personal Torture" - LUNA

Lauren Nolan

Personal Torture by LUNA Alt Cover

Only a few months following her massive Eurovision debut, LUNA is back with her latest single, Personal Torture. Personal Torture is a fun, electro-pop banger straight out of the 1980s. The beat is pulsing, the synths sparkling, and the song is a fast, upbeat romp. The title references how we often put ourselves into boxes that cause our very own personal torture. LUNA states that the idea came to her while living in Stockholm: "This track is about stepping out of that spiral, flipping the table on what no longer serves, and finally putting yourself first." Personal Torture is a freeing track. LUNA'S message of self-care is strong, and she places it under a really solid pop tune.

Personal Torture is an expertly produced track. LUNA is already known for her masterful work in electronica, and her latest single is no different. The song is a dynamic ride, starting with a building, pulsating beat that explodes in the chorus. Personal Torture is such a playful song, taking various tempos and sounds and putting them together. LUNA's use of autotune in the pre-chorus and the tempo change during the titular line make the song a delightful listen. She truly understands the 1980s electronic aesthetic and emulates it flawlessly. LUNA's lyrics of doing what's best for you are sweet and motivational. Lines like "No one else could set me free, cause I'm not my enemy / Gonna sing in a brand new key" are so catchy that the message sticks. Personal Torture is a great new entry from LUNA and an exciting preview of her next project.

LUNA is a Polish singer-songwriter whose idiosyncratic sound and voice have catapulted her into stardom. LUNA describes her sound as "cosmic pop." Her songs blend sounds from EDM, pop, and alternative genres to create a dreamy, ethereal aesthetic all her own. Her career has already reached enormous heights. LUNA has performed at numerous festivals, televised events like the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, and most notably, Eurovision this past May, where she sang her hit, "The Tower." The Tower will feature on her upcoming album, "No Rest," alongside Personal Torture. No Rest is slated for a release in early February 2025, and based on the singles already, it is one to look out for. You can listen to Personal Torture, as well as the rest of LUNA's discography, on all streaming platforms now.
