Review: "Rut" - Emily Evans

Many of us have this perpetual tendency to only see the best in the ones we love. This habit can often lead to disappointment or heartbreak when someone we trust betrays us. Emily Evans perfectly captures this feeling of perceived disloyalty and deception in her debut single, ‘Rut’. Throughout the song, Emily communicates a story of recovery from a traumatic breakup. From feeling foolish and blind about missing the patterns of toxicity, to feeling lost in life after losing your partner and potential future together, Emily covers all the bases. The song's heart-wrenching lyrics such as, “I didn’t see the lies, you always hid on the inside” illustrate the notion of finally realizing that you have been taken advantage of.

‘Rut’ opens with delicate piano notes, soft vocals and subtle percussion. The song’s creative use of snapping and underlaying drawn-out harmonies help create a unique melody. Emily’s enchanting voice ranges in pitch throughout different parts of the song, with the chorus containing alluring soprano notes and high-pitched runs, contrasted with her rich lower register that we hear in the bridge. The raw emotion and lyrical depth are further conveyed with Emily’s passionate singing and powerful instrumentation. The feelings and experiences portrayed in ‘Rut’ certainly offer audiences a sense of relatability and provide hope that the toughest hardships can be learned from and used as a powerful creative outlet to better oneself and those around us.

The 20-year-old Scottish singer-songwriter, Emily Evans is a pop artist whose music communicates deep emotion and confronts difficult topics, such as heartbreak. One of Emily’s biggest aspirations is to create songs that resonate with her listeners. She has a great love for songwriting, often experimenting with the keyboard in her bedroom to compose new music. Emily is heavily active on TikTok, where she covers many songs by artists such as Zara Larsson, Olivia Rodrigo and Katy Perry. She also uses the platform to promote her original music content. Although ‘Rut’ is her only single released thus far, it has amassed over 2.5k streams on Spotify alone, the platform where Emily has already reached 724 monthly listeners. Emily has begun performing her music live, with her most recent venue appearances occurring at Broadcast Glasgow and GirlsGirlsGirlsGlasgow, a space for women and LGBTQIA+ people in music. According to her live shows, it would seem as though she already has more original music ready to record and release. Emily Evan’s angelic soprano vocals and heartfelt lyricism, present her as a budding pop artist with star potential.
