The incredible singer-songwriter, Matilda, has released her latest song which is the ultimate catchy, sad girl anthem for the summertime. "sad disco girl" tells a story that is all too familiar and relatable for everyone. Sadness can come and go in waves for all of us, even during "fun times" when it is almost expected for you to be happy - like during the summer months. In "sad disco girl," Matilda makes it clear to listeners that its okay to not feel 100% your best all the time. Even if others or society may add more pressure to strive for emotional, physical, or mental perfection, Matilda acknowledges that this is not always possible, and that it's okay. Sometimes, one of the only ways to overcome summertime blues is by putting on a pretty mask, getting around people you care about, and dancing away whatever sadness is weighing you down. With lyrics like "I'm pretty but pretty sad, too" and "I wish that I'd be fine alone, but I can't stand the quiet, so anyone’s invited" Matilda makes everyone feel heard and supported while listening to "sad disco girl".
While Matilda's lyrics tell a relatable, understanding message, the overall sound of "sad disco girl" adds to the message even more. The song balances a sound that is a perfect blend of dreamy, melancholy, and lively. During the bridge and verses, the songs leans heavily into this melancholy, dream-like vibe that builds off the impactful lyrics. When the chorus comes in, the tempo picks up with catchy background music and these rhythmic, pulsating beats that you can feel within you. The shifts between the slower verses and the more upbeat chorus resembles highs and lows: sadness being masked by exhilarating experiences while chasing after happiness. Matilda's powerful vocals add a lot of warmth to the song from the beginning until the very end. The lyrics are heavy with emotions and sticks with you while listening, but her voice as she sings feels hopeful, making it hard to resist singing or dancing along to fight away your sadness.
Swedish singer-songwriter, Matilda, is a visionary who creates unforgettable and emotional electronic-pop music.
