Review: "Said It After" - Summy

Everyone’s favorite whimsical fairy princess has released another magical song. Summy’s new single, “Said It After”, is a heart-wrenching song about the aftermath of a breakup. She tells the story about her partner coming back after it’s over to finally say the words that were left unsaid. These words mean nothing now. It is too late. This is a song that pulls at the heartstrings of listeners. Summy describes the feelings she had during the relationship. They made her feel like she was everything, until everything faded away. They were covering up their demons and battles while in the relationship, projecting them all onto Summy. In the end, her partner ultimately allowed the relationship to end and broke her to pieces. Summy and her team of co-writers flawlessly craft a beautifully heartbreaking song.

“Said It After” is an ethereal song with incredible synths and beautiful vocals. The music video for the song perfectly encapsulates this aesthetic. The music video is filled with whimsical fairies, magical scenery, and a tragic twist. It captures Summy’s aesthetic while bringing the story to life. The music video follows a fairy who befriends a man with a horse head. They then enjoy a tea party with other fairies. While they are having a good time, there is another man hunting the fairytale creatures. The video comes to a tragic end when Summy’s fairy character is struck by an arrow and succumbs to the wounds. The four fairies have a funeral for her where they cover her with flowers and send her down the river. At the end, the horse man removes his mask and says, “I’m sorry”. This parallels the meaning of the song itself. He revealed his true self in the end and apologized for her death, but his words are too little too late. Summy using a whimsical aesthetic to depict a dark storyline is a brilliant use of imagery and symbolism.

Summy is an alternative pop artist from Arizona. She moved to California when she was 15 years old to pursue her career in music. Summy made her debut in 2018 with her first single, “Sus”. She then released her debut EP, “Known Better”, in 2020. “Said It After” is her first release in two years. She has nearly 100,000 followers on Instagram and over 2.5 million streams across all platforms. She is known for her ethereal aesthetics and whimsical lyrics. She uses these themes to combat her depression and mental health, inspiring others to look at the beautiful parts of life even in dark times.
